1301 Harry Byrd Hwy, Darlington, SC 843-395-8499
For NASCAR fans, Darlington, South Carolina is home to the Darlington Raceway Stock Car Museum and NMPA (National Motorsports Press Association) Hall of Fame, both open 7 days a week. In addition to the annual May race weekend, there are scheduled car shows and driving schools. In 1959, Harold Brasington built a 1 ¼ mile track on land that had once been used to grow peanut and cotton. Landowner, Jack Ramsey, had just one request…don’t disturb his fishing pond. So Brasington was forced to change the design from a geometrically correct oval to more of an egg-shape. In doing so, he preserved the fishing hole and made Darlington Raceway one of the most challenging tracks in the country. On Labor Day 1950, 25,000 people showed up to Darlington Raceway’s inaugural race.
